What are the Income Requirements for Family-Based Immigration?

ImmiLaw

If you are thinking of sponsoring a family member to enter the United States, it is critical that you understand the immigration laws and what is required of you. Immigration law in the U.S. recognizes the importance of family reunification and of providing family members with a better life. Still, if you do not fulfill the requirements, it can cause lengthy delays in your petition and perhaps even a denial.

One of the most important requirements in family-based immigration is the income requirement. Our Florida immigration attorney explains more about this requirement below.

What is the Required Income to Sponsor a Family Member for Immigration?

To sponsor a family member to enter the United States, you, as the sponsor, must prove that you have the financial capacity to support the individual once they are in the country. The federal government wants to ensure that immigrants do not become a financial strain on the country due to limited resources.

Generally speaking, sponsors must show that their income is at least 125 percent above the poverty line for their household size to fulfill the requirements. As of 2025, the income requirements per household size for most sponsors are as follows:

  • Two people: A minimum of $26,437
  • Three people: A minimum of $33,312
  • Four people: A minimum of $40,187
  • Five people: A minimum of $47,062
  • Six people: A minimum of $53,937
  • Seven people: A minimum of $60,812
  • Eight people: A minimum of $67,687

For each additional household member, sponsors should add $6,875. For individuals who are in the military and who are on active duty, the income thresholds are lower.

How to Prove Fulfillment of Income Requirements

To prove that you meet the minimum income requirements to sponsor a family member, you must submit documentation such as pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, and employment letters. This documentation can verify your income to immigration authorities and show that you can financially support your family member while they are in the United States. It is critical to be accurate and thorough when you prepare these documents to avoid complications or delays in the process.

Other Options if You Do Not Meet the Income Requirements

If you do not meet the required minimum income thresholds for family-based immigration, you may be able to use a joint sponsor. The joint sponsor can then accept economic responsibility for the immigrant. You and the joint sponsor cannot combine incomes to meet the requirements. Instead, the joint sponsor must meet the income threshold on their own.
